Can
you spot a liar?
- MSNBC
Actually everybody lies. It may be only a little, it may be "white" lies but everyone tells lies or omits the truth sometimes. We start lying around age 4 to 5 when we first discover that not everyone believes what we do. Once that awareness sets in and the understanding of the use and power of language also becomes obvious to children they will start to use their words... sometimes to lie. This first lying is not to be malicious but rather to see that they can manipulate their environment. Then it evolves into being able to dodge getting in trouble or getting what they want. Actually, lying is really thought to be an evolutionary psychological process (something the species needs) because lying is even seen in Apes who used sign language to "Blame" something they did on another animal when they were confronted for their "naughty act."

- How can you tell if someone is lying to you? How tolerant are you
of someone lying to you (this takes some deep thinking and may not
be something that can be answered at this time - rather, something
that is good to think about during the week)? How easily do you forgive
someone who lies to you?
- Do you think it is possible for someone to go through life without
telling a lie? Why do you think that way? Do you believe lying is
a sin? Do you think all acts of lying are a sin or are there some
exceptions? Explain. Are there appropriate times to lie? What are
they or why not (being interrogated in wartime, if you are facing
a bully, someone you are close to could face punishment or receive
the effects of their actions for the rest of their life based on your
honesty, revealing something from your past)?
- What are some reasons you think people, young and old, lie?
- What does the Bible say about lying?
Proverbs 24:28; Exodus 20:16; Numbers 23:19; John 8:44; Psalm 26:4;
Matthew 5:19; 1 John 1:10; Psalm 55:23; Proverbs 12:22; Revelation
21:8; Acts 5:1-11.
