Woman Follows Google Maps “Walking” Directions, Gets Hit, Sues
- Search Engine Land
How does a leisurely stroll down Deer Valley Drive sound? Nice? Wait...it gets better. Deer Valley Drive is in Park City, Utah. Sound even better? One more thing: Deer Valley Drive is also known as “State Route 224.”
Well you might be thinking twice about taking that stroll now, but Lauren Rosenberg didn't. Lauren plotted her course across Park City using Google Maps on her Blackberry. Included in the stroll was a half mile jaunt on the highway. When she got to that part of the course, she followed Google's instructions down the highway, which had no sidewalk or any other walking path and was subsequently hit by a car.
Now Ms. Rosenberg is suing Google (and the driver of the car that hit her) for damages “in excess of $100,000.00."

- Do you think that a $100,000 lawsuit against Google is fair, considering the fact that the map led Ms. Rosenberg into harm's way?
- Google's walking maps are new, and contain warnings about some routes not containing proper walking paths, but this warning doesn't appear on Blackberry renderings of Google Maps. Should Google have been responsible to warn its users more prominently?
- What percentages of blame would you give each to Ms. Rosenberg, Google and the vehicle driver for this accident
- If you're going somewhere you've never been, what do you rely on for directions to get there? Are you more of a “follow-the-map” type, or “turn-by-turn” directions type?
- If your directions instructed you do talk down Deer Valley Drive, do you think you would have done it?
- Have you ever been led astray with bad instructions, or been given bad directions?
We don't want a faulty guide, but we also don't want to go without a guide at all. Ms. Rosenberg needed a map to find where she was going. Google Maps failed her, but a proper map, or the sense to alter her route, would have led her to her destination safely. Good advice from trustworthy sources is also important in life. “The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.”(Proverbs 12:15-28)
- Who do you turn to first for advice in life?
- Can you think of an example of really good or really bad advice you've gotten in the past?
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” says Psalm 119:105. Ultimately, we have God's word as the ultimate test for truth and dependability.
- How can we use the advice of those we trust and the dependability of God's word together, to give us direction in life?

How do you define success for your child? "Graduates from a prestigious college." "Nabs a high-paying job." "Settles down with a nice family." Sounds good. But what if you got it all wrong?
What about greatness? Where does it fit in? "If you aim your children at anything less than greatness, you'll set them up to miss the whole point of their lives," says author Tim Kimmel. In Raising Kids for True Greatness, Kimmel turns the definition of success on its head and guides you in preparing your child for a life that will easily eclipse the goals of those who are merely successful.
