Looking for work? Unemployed need not apply
- CNNMoney.com

Have you ever tried to get a job before but been turned down? It could be for any number of reasons: not the right experience, not enough education, no job. Wait. No job? Believe it or not, many companies have been requiring current employment in order to get consideration for any job openings. In other words, those that need jobs the most will not, in many cases, even be allowed to turn in applications. Recruiters and experts report that this is a growing trend, much to the frustration of the record numbers of job seekers in the market today.

Some companies have included messages in their job postings saying "unemployed candidates will not be considered,” while others have simply ruled unemployed applicants out of contention.

  • What motivation do you think a company might have for only considering employed people as new hires?

  • Do you think this kind of policy is fair? Do you think it is wise? Do you think it is ethical? Explain your thoughts.

  • The phrase “the rich get richer” certainly can apply here; what other aspects of life do you see the rich getting richer?

When Jesus called his disciples, one of the men he asked to follow Him was a tax collector named Matthew (also known as Levi). Since tax collectors worked for the Roman government they were often look down upon and seen as low-lives. After Matthew answered Jesus’ call to follow Him, he threw a party and many other low-lives attended, along with Jesus and the other apostles. Some saw this and were offended that Jesus would associate with this low quality of people, and they questioned him about it. Jesus answered, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.”(Luke 5:31 NIV) He was coming to save, and he was reaching out to those who needed saving.

If we look closely enough, we can see in our own friendship and relationships that we sometimes see people as assets and liabilities. We want to invest in “asset friends” and avoid “liability friends”. Like the employer who says “unemployed need not apply,” we have a friendship requirement that says “needy people need not apply.”

  • How do you interview a friend applicant?

  • What criteria do you have for applicants?

  • Do you post a job opening or just scout for prospects?

  • Are you always receptive to applicants?

Ultimately, God wants to use us to reach the lost, just as Jesus did. “How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14 NASB)

  • Do we allow ourselves to be used by God in this way? Do we reach out to “liabilities” and allow them into our lives?

Raising Kids for True Greatness

How do you define success for your child? "Graduates from a prestigious college." "Nabs a high-paying job." "Settles down with a nice family." Sounds good. But what if you got it all wrong?

What about greatness? Where does it fit in? "If you aim your children at anything less than greatness, you'll set them up to miss the whole point of their lives," says author Tim Kimmel. In Raising Kids for True Greatness, Kimmel turns the definition of success on its head and guides you in preparing your child for a life that will easily eclipse the goals of those who are merely successful.
