Most Prefer ‘Merry Christmas’ to ‘Happy Holidays’
- Rasmussen Reports
Happy Holidays from Dinner Dialog! Or, should I say “Merry Christmas?” A recent Rasmussen survey found that an overwhelming majority of Americans prefer that stores promote a “Merry Christmas,” rather than a more inclusive “Happy Holidays.”

Sixty-four percent of those surveyed preferred signage in stores that read “Merry Christmas,” while only 24% preferred “Happy Holidays.” Surveys conducted in years past showed a similar partiality for acknowledging Christmas as the focus of the Holiday season.
- Which do you prefer? “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays?”
- Do you often notice when stores avoid using the word “Christmas” in their signage?
- How important to you is it that stores recognize Christmas, or avoid it?
- Would you go so far as to shop one store over another because it reflects your preference?
The balance between being inclusive of many traditions and recognizing the overwhelming preponderance of Christians in the U.S. has created a tension felt by both corporations and government. Most, if not all, school districts and government agencies have stopped making any reference to “Christmas”, yet December 25th is clearly given special status to accommodate those who celebrate Christmas.
- What responsibilities do businesses have to recognize Christmas and what concessions, if any, should be made to those who observe other traditions, or no tradition at all?
- What about government’s responsibility?
When Isaiah foretold of the coming Messiah, he made it clear the importance of Christmas:
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace, there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV)
- What responsibly do you think your family has to proclaim the importance of Christmas during the holiday season?
- What kinds of things can you do to as a family to keep Christ as focus of Christmas?
- Which of your family’s traditions point to Christ, and which detract from a focus on Him?

Raising Kids For True Greatness
You want only the best for your kids. And you want them to be successful. Sure, there's nothing wrong with that. But what if there was something more? Could your definition of success be leaving out the most important part?

How do you define success for your child? "Graduates from a prestigious college." "Nabs a high-paying job." "Settles down with a nice family." Sounds good. But what if you got it all wrong?
What about greatness? Where does it fit in? "If you aim your children at anything less than greatness, you'll set them up to miss the whole point of their lives," says author Tim Kimmel. In Raising Kids for True Greatness, Kimmel turns the definition of success on its head and guides you in preparing your child for a life that will easily eclipse the goals of those who are merely successful.
